pArAdOx OnE - Reality?

Reality Quake.jpg

Download containing both albums and EPs. First 4 original CDs released on Rick Ray's Neurosis label in Ohio. The first CD ‘reality Quake’ (2000) was well received and got much radio play as did the second, ‘Dimension of Miracles’ (2002). Start anywhere you like.

PARADOX ONE was formed in 2000 as a mostly solo project by multi-instrumentalist Phil Jackson supported occasionally by other musicians. His first album REALITY QUAKE (2000) was released on Ohio guitarist RICK RAY’s Neurosis label. Phil was blown away by some of the comments on his first foray into recorded music. Paul Fraser, RIP, of Australian band Brainstorm and author of astronomy book “Beyond Space” spoke of “visionary music – each time you play it you hear something new.” Markus Weis, writing for the Progressive Rock Metal website: “spacey, ambient electro with prog rock influences (wide keyboard carpets); fine melodies; highly atmospheric songs.” European Progressive Rock Reviews (EPRR): “With a rating of 90% - unmissable; a major album of 2000.” Ed Macan, music professor, musician and author of “Rocking the Classics”: “Urbmon 116 is the finest new electronic tracks I have heard in a long time.”

DIMENSION OF MIRACLES (2002) (Phil had been regularly in touch with sci-fi author ROBERT SHECKLEY and this was based on one of his books) similarly attracted favourable comments, referring to: “Jackson’s intuitive and definitive mastery of analogue synth art rock” (Robert Urban, US musician and producer); “Imagine ultra-spaced out ELP (Emerson) jamming with Hawkwind” – with reference to the track ‘Alien Harvest’” said Jerry Kranitz at Aural Innovations. ‘From the Void’ was singled out as a key track in an 85% review by EPPR. ESCALATORS TO MARS (200?) divided opinion, but attracted a ***** review from Vitaly Menshikov in Progressor Magazine: “painted with rich, spacey, symphonic, colourful passages and synth solos; psychedelic, diverse and profound.” ALTERNATE REALITY (200?) completed a series of four albums for Neurosis, and Phil continued recording sporadically thereafter, all compiled on a double CD ‘best of’ REALITY? (Still available on Bandcamp), along with THIS FRAGILE PEACE (201?) recorded with members of Census of Hallucinations and guitarist John Simms ex CLEAR BLUE SKY, released on the STONE PREMONITIONS label (the CD can be bought from SP directly).

Much to Phil’s delight and surprise, PARADOX ONE music was played on various radio shows throughout the world on the same bill as the likes of Jethro Tull, Fish, Brand X, The Bevis Frond, Steve Hackett and even Frank Zappa!! Even more bizarrely ‘Angel Song in Neon’ reached #2 in the new Artist radio chart and ‘Son of Little Green Men’ made #15 on the Be Sonic UK rock chart (out of 76,000 songs!!)

All of this would not have been possible without the support and promotion of RICK RAY (his artwork for the albums was much commented on), the constructive reviews and the amazing radio play: Tony Currie of Radio 6 International had ‘Angel Song in Neon’ on continuous rotation for 10 weeks. STUART HAMILTON and TIM JONES and co were other major figures in the growth of Paradox One: the former for kindly creating and updating the website (now defunct and replaced by this one- at last!); the latter for his support and encouragement – I had the great honour of compiling the first two CD Stone Premonitions retrospective. And, last but certainly not least, were the ‘super fans’ – not many, granted – but devoted, giving me the inspiration to keep going: Ken Senior of Parallel or 90 Degrees etc, Kathy Bernstein from LA, who said that “listening to your albums reminds me of some of those great concept albums of the 70s – you’re never sure what’s coming nest; it’s all so interesting and engrossing.” And Don Williams, from New Zealand, who had Paradox One listening nights!! Please head on over to Bandcamp if you want to find out more.
