THE LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL – 15TH to 24TH NOVEMBER, 2024

As The London Jazz Festival is getting closer, it’s time to have a look at some recent releases by some of the headliners. Pianist NEIL COWLEY has reformed his trio, and what I’ve heard of his latest album “Entity” is most impressive. They play at EartH in Hackney on 19th November, and, hopefully, I’ll be there to report on proceedings. PAT METHENY, who is also featured in JAZZWISE magazine this month, is at The Barbican on 15th November and his latest album “MoonDial” has been attracting favourable reviews.

Amongst the notable albums released during the past few months are: for lovers of the harp in a jazz context, DOROTHY ASHBY’s “Afro-Harping” on CD and double LP (Verve); HORACE TAPSCOTT PAN AFRIKAN PEOPLE’S ARKESTRA’s “60 Years”, another double LP set on The Village (It can also be listened to on BANDCAMP); ELEPHANT 9’s album with TERJE RYPDAL, “Catching Fire”, over 70 minutes of music on LP and CD; keyboard player extraordinaire PARTICE RUSHEN’s “Prelusion” LP on Prestige; GERRY MULLIGAN’s QUARTET with “Spring in Stockholm: Live at Konserthuset, 1959”, an LP/ CD of a concert taped for radio; and some new names for me to check out: alto saxophonist IMMANUEL WILKINS with his quintet and various singers with “Blues Blood” (an artist that is being mentioned in the same breath as Kenny Garrett of one of Miles Davis’s bands); and another alto saxophonist quintet leader, DE VIN DANIELS with his “LesGo!” album.

I hope to find the time to do some reviews in the coming weeks. Watch this space!
