THE BEVIS FROND - RE-DISSCOVERY: BEVIS FROND IS HIT SQUAD (2023)

Benedict Jackson

Previously only available on CD, “Hit Squad” appeared last year on vinyl for the first time with updated artwork. The blurb speaks volumes: “From the fuzziest West coast psych to lilting acoustic work by way of power pop and gorgeous organ flurries…”

Another classic album from the Frond that includes the slow-burning incendiary rock of ‘Dragons’ with more phenomenal guitar playing on ‘Mission Completed’, the heartfelt balladry of ‘I Feel Bad About You’; the “faux 60s spy-film” vibe of the title track, a retro joy - for a few moments I thought I was listening to DUANE EDDY, and the classy psych rock of the 8-minute ‘Through the Hedge’; resonant bass and snappy drumming, dual guitars, retro organ sounding like an old Farfisa. The guitar drenched thought provoking ‘Your Little Point’ is another particular highlight. If only opener ‘All set’ had been a few minutes longer!
