PROG ROCK – 50 YEARS AGO

Benedict Jackson

For nostalgia’s sake- well, why not? – we had a look at two giants of jazz, BILLLY COBHAM and KEITH JARRETT in 1974. How about this for a trio of starters for great prog albums of 1974?

CAMEL – MIRAGE: an amazing album that has stood the test of time, but Camel would have to wait until 1975 with THE SNOW GOOSE to break into the ‘big time’. The only other subsequent album that could have matched MIRAGE would be MOON MADNESS (1976)- what a trilogy of albums! But let’s not forget the eponymous debut and one of their greatest songs ‘Never Let Go’.

YES – RELAYER and GENESIS – THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY also came out in 1974. I could compile a long list, but on this occasion, will refrain. Please do make contact if you wish to add to it!
