MORE OF THE LATEST IN JAZZ – MAGNE THORMODSAETER, TIM GARLAND, BILL FRISELL and KAMASI WASHINGTON (2024)

Updated: May 21, 2024

Scanning through the latest jazz releases as of 21st April, I have picked out the latest to investigate. Thormodsaeter is a bassist described as “an ECM alumni and in demand session musician”. The description of a 35-minute concept album in five movements with guitar, piano, drums, saxes, trumpet and a string octet comprising celli, violas and violins really intrigues me. (Please note – this is not released until 17th May).

Marking 20 years of his Lighthouse Trio, completed by Gwilym Simcock (ex PAT METHENY) and a familiar face in roving drummer Asaf Sirkis, “The Moment of Departure” is a double LP of two halves by British saxophonist and composer TIM GARLAND featuring the Britten Sinfonia strings, on the second of which Garland is joined by trumpeter Yazz Ahmed and violinist Thomas Gould.

In Tim’s own words, “A shout of fearless freedom, the compositions all having crucial and varied relationships with improvised music influenced by classical music, with a jazz heart.”

Guitarist BILL FRISELL’s “Orchestras” is coming on Blue Note on 2 x CD, 2 x LP and 3 x LP (the latter including live performances) with his trio completed by Thomas Morgan on bass and Rudy Roston on drums playing a mixture of originals and standards. It all stated apparently when trombonist, keyboardist, composer (etc) MIKE GIBBS, at the age of 86 arranged Bill’s music for some concerts in Belgium and Italy.

I am a big fan of KAMASI WASHINGTON already, but am relieved that he has trimmed down the length of his releases this time, which started with the aptly named “The Epic”. His latest depiction of post-modern spiritual jazz-fusion, “Fearless Movement”, is only 2 x CD or 2 x LP and includes a reconstruction of FRANK ZAPPA’s ‘Computer Love”.

BTW I really am needing some help, so anyone who wants to submit reviews on anything Prog/ Psych/ Space Rock/ Jazz etcetera is most welcome! It’s phil7jackson@outlook.com for your thoughts and opinions.
