MASCOT MOTH – SESIWN ARBROFOL ABERTAWE (2024) EP (Bandcamp)

Benedict Jackson

‘I Didn’t Know’ is a cool sax/ guitar led groove (Rob Harrison) with nice harmony vocals from Jack Hunter and David Thomas, a song of regret perhaps, sung in nonchalant Canterbury style, although it should be noted that, as you might have guessed, the group comes from Llanfyllin in Wales. ‘Incommensurability’ (now there’s a title for you) is an improvisational instrumental based on a primitive riff with some jazzy extrapolations involving sax and cello that begins with playful recorders, most dreamlike, stretching out to nearly 10 minutes. In fact, recorders introduce all the numbers as is the case on ‘Doublespeak’, a catchy, laid-back number with a ‘staccato’ guitar sound and percussion from fourth group member Sioned Camlin. ‘Different Minds’ is the heaviest offering so far, another instrumental with high register bass, wailing guitar and sax combining and a more strident approach to the drumming. As with NOL I ANNWFN, also reviewed on DISS a few months ago, this latest album has a maundering charm in a style that is difficult to classify.
