Free, explorative jazz is not the easiest music to get into and it helps if there are a few hooks to hang onto. There are just four parts to this album and there is a hint of swing on the third part and, elsewhere a nod to ‘Love Supreme’ expressed through the double bass line. Some crisp drumming (some intricate stick work is also deployed) and an agile bassist offer empathetic support to this tenor saxophone-led quixotic and quirky album. There is a symbiosis between the musicians that gels it all together and the album ends gently with just bass and drums, a nice touch. “Divisions” is released by Discus Music through Bandcamp.
