JIM MULLEN QUARTET – FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE (Stunt CD/ DL) (2024)

If you like your jazz smooth, soulful and occasionally funky, then check out Jim’s latest album with Danish tenor saxophonist Jan Harbeck, Chicago organist Ben Paterson and Danish drummer Kristian Leth. Mullen’s ever so clean guitar tones contrast with Harbeck’s distinctive, slinky sax and are complimented by the kind of B3 organ accompaniment that has brought such acclaim to Jim’s organ trio in recent years. (It is hard to believe that this is Mullen and Paterson’s first recording together). There are eleven tracks in total and only one Mullen original, Medication, which stands up well in the company of ‘standards’ like Duke Ellington / Juan Tizol’s ‘Caravan’, Bobby Timmons’ ‘This Here’ and Jimmy McGriff’s ‘Kiko’, making for an album that is the fine tradition of early recordings by Grant Green or Wes Montgomery,
