HAWKWIND – LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL (Cherry Red) (31st Jan, 2025) (3 x CD; 3 x LP)

Benedict Jackson

The Royal Albert Hall – doesn’t seem quite right does, it? It’s a real rags to riches story in the sense that Dave Brock started off as a busker. The date was Friday, 29th September, 2023 when Hawkwind played tracks from their 2023 album “The Future Never Waits” and some cosmic blasts from the past. It was a not entirely predictable setlist – of course ‘Masters of the Universe’ had to be there, but ‘Levitation’, ‘Spirit of the Age’ and ‘Assault and Battery’ are nice reminders of different phases of Hawkwind history. In addition to Dave Brock, Richard Chadwick (drums), Magnus Martin (guitar/vocals), Doug MacKinnon (bass), and Tim Lewis (synths/keyboards) were the most recent incarnation of the legendary band, and Arthur Brown made a guest appearance with some poems between songs. I am not entirely sure why a third CD of rehearsals were included in a world already saturated with nostalgic music. However, fans have a new album “There is no Space for Us” (really?) to look forward to, which is to be released in the Spring of 2025 and to be promoted by a live tour of England.
