CAMEL – MOON MADNESS (Esoteric Recordings) (1976/ 2025) (2 x CD + Blu-ray)

Benedict Jackson

Less vocals and more instrumental than previous albums, “Moon Madness” is another strong album from the Camel canon, featuring tracks like ‘Song within a Song’ with its unmistakeable Andy Latimer guitar and an agreeable Moog solo from Pete Bardens; ‘Lunar Sea’, a rhythmically complex piece (full role for Doug Ferguson and Andy Ward) – these two made it as regulars in the Camel live act, which I was privileged to witness on a number of occasions; and ‘Airborn’ with the classic Camel combination of haunting guitar and flute and a memorable ‘riff’ – of course!

This 3-disc set is available from 28th February and contains the original album mix remastered plus 5.1 surround sound and stereo mixes with four bonus tracks from demo sessions (‘Spirit of the Water’, ‘Chord Change’ and ‘Lunar Sea’) and the single version of ‘Another Night’. The Blu-ray has the live at Hammersmith Odeon performance from 14th April, 1976: track listing is ‘’The White Rider’, ‘Lunar Sea’. ‘Preparation’, ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Another Night’ and ‘Lady Fantasy’. Of course, there is the illustrated booklet and essay we have come to expect from Esoteric as part of the package.
